The Acropolis is a mystery ship in today's world. A haunted ship to some, a ghost ship filled with the souls of the dead who can not find peace to others.
No matter what your view, the Acropolis has certainly come down in legend since her ill fated mission in 7000.
The Acropolis was completed in 6756, and after her trails she set sail as part of the 'fast squadron' theory. As such, she was teamed up with other fast vessels (especially in the hyperdrive area) and sent on long range strike missions. While she never had many great achievements (or great failures for that matter), she performed invaluable work regarding squadron composition.
Then came the time that she was to achieve greatness. For a long while, the Cylons had been the using system of Myus as a supply and command base. The Acropolis and her small squadron of fast ships were assigned the task of knocking out the command centre. It was thought that the Cylons would be surprised by this blatant strike, and that the asteroids themselves would supply cover to the squadron. With the command centre knocked out, the Cylons would be in disarray and escape would be assured.
It was hoped that the destruction of the command centre would put the Cylons on a defensive footing for a few yahrens, and allow the Colonials to go on a big offensive all along the front lines. The strike was designed to be held on the eve of the Seventh Millennia, and was going to mark the history books with the time the Colonials took back what had been taken from them.
However, the Acropolis and her squadron never arrived at Myus, and the Cylons continued to use the command facilities for many yahrens to come. The big planned offensive never came to fruition.
The Acropolis and her squadron were thought lost. It was evident that they never arrived at the target, but where they vanished to, nobody knew.
Over the yahrens, the Acropolis and her squadron became a myth, and sightings of them were reported from all over Colonial space. Sometimes alone, sometimes with other ships, sometimes damaged, sometimes just hanging around. The ship would never answer hails and would not stick around to be boarded though, usually simply vanishing.
Then, in 7204, a strange thing happened. Deep range scouts reported that the Cylon base at Myus was under attack, by forces unknown. No Colonial fleet was in the area, but yet Colonial signals were being broadcast from the area, although the codes were two hundred yahrens out of date. After a few hours, the signals ended, and a scout investigated the Myus system to find that the command centre had been destroyed. The command centre had become a fairly unimportant base for the Cylons, as it was now deep in Cylon territory, and did not have many defenders. The attackers had definitely been Colonial, as the wreckage from several destroyed vessels proved. There were no survivors, but the destroyed ships were later identified as being from the Acropolis squadron.
How they got there still remains a mystery. As does the continued sightings of the Acropolis and elements of her fleet.
