Galacticon (2k)

Sunday 26th October, 2003

Breakfast was served with an additional surprise. No, the croissants were not hot, but we were given our posters! Nice large affairs with a wad of signatures on them. Unfortunately, not everyone had signed the posters, so while the Ballroom was being set up, we waded into the dealer room to track down the offending people and force them to sign our posters. Actually, they all seemed pretty good about it, but it would not be until the end of the day when everyone had turned up that the mission would be a success.

Because of this, I missed most of the "The Amazing men behind the spectacular F/X of Battlestar Galactica", but what I did catch was pretty darn good, especially when the sound people were talking about how they created some of the sounds and what they actually used to make them! A few of the original models were on display too, but unfortunately my camera was not that great to take shots of them.

After this, things started to get a little bit out of order. The auction should have been next, but instead it got split up over the rest of the day in half hour lots. I only attended a couple of those, but seeing the original pack of Pyramid cards go for several hundred dollars brought the whole thing completely out of my league...

Due to various events outside of my control (running into Virginia Hey and chatting to her for about half an hour, speaking to Tom DeSanto and the like), I missed the panels with Stu Phillips.

The Game panel should have been next, but was swapped with Richard Hatch and Brad Linaweaver reading from their novel "Paradis". That was interesting as they were explaining why the novel seemed to have a short ending. That was because their editor cut out the last twenty to thirty pages. Which would explain a lot.

Following this was "it is all in how you play... Introducing Battlestar Galactica: The Game". Whilst the demo was available to play in the dealer room all weekend, here we got to see all the various cut scenes of the game and to be honest I can not wait. Whilst set forty yahrens before the original series, the game has had to change the odd fact to make it slightly compatible with the new Ron Moore series, and in the end cut scene you see the new Galactica. I am impressed by what were not done here, and when it comes out, I look forward to playing.

And that was kind of it for me at the Con. Following this was the "Writing Battlestar Galactica" panel, but I was busy getting Laurette Spang's signature on my poster, and then just had time to get to the "Dead Daggit Party", just after the closing speeches.
