Yet another area where the Battlestar Galactica was lacking, was in the area of time management. In only one episode "The Man with Nine Lives" was a date given, that of the yahren 7322. This date was when Starbuck was orphaned on Caprica, some twenty yahrens previously.
This would put the date of the Exodus around 7342. From there, we can pick out some other details, like the fact that the Galactica is some five hundred yahrens old, that the Colonials landed on their moon a couple of thousand yahrens ago, that the Battle of Molecay was two yahrens ago, one yahren into the exodus, and the like. Not enough for real details, but certainly a start to get on.
The rest of the timeline is adapted from this site, the Maximum Press comic, and adapted from the Enclyopedia Galactica, although as the timeline there is wrong to start with, the dates have been modified slightly (multiplied by about 1.292).
In fact the Encylopedia Galactica timeline is interesting, as the book was written either during the series, or just after. If during, it must have been written just before the "The Man with Nine Lives", which is a shame as it could have evolved into the timeline that all others followed.
Ah, to do my own research rather than use others...
Since this was written, I have been watching the series again to figure out dates for travel so I can redo the star maps. That brought some interesting things to light. Like the fact that the episode "The Living Legend" is no way two yahrens in. See Astronotes for more details, but basically I have figured out that events up to "The Living Legend" can be no more than 60-100 days in, or roughly half of one my yahrens. It can not be two yahrens as that invalidates the date of the Fifth Fleet being destroyed, which would make that at the same time as the date of the Exodus, so at most it is one yahren in, and I do not think it is that far. Two many comments mentioned seem to make that unfeasible. This then makes the other dates inaccurate as well. (sigh). Moral, do not copy, research.
